Reposting this way of measuring campfire cooking temperatures because folks found it useful.

To get a rough estimate of a fire’s temperature hover your hand over the cooking area. How long you can hover your hand over the heat gives you an estimate of the temperature:

Less than 1 second: +600 F (high)
1-2 secs: 400-500 F (med-high)
3-4 secs: 350-375 F (medium)
5-7 secs: 325-350 F (low)

Just be careful not to burn yourself!

I’m finishing up a blog post about Moose’s first camping trip along with some tips for camping with dogs. In the meantime, here’s a few of my tips:

- Make sure your dog is up to date with vaccinations, tick and flea prevention.

- Have ID tags on your dog. Bonus if you can get them microchipped.

- Do a test run in a yard before planning your trip.

- If your dog is new to camping, start small and adjust your expectations. Our dogs live cushy lives and you’ll be putting them in an unknown situation. Have patience and give your dog time to adjust.

- Your dog is going to get SO dirty. Bring 2 dog towels. One for outdoors and the other for inside the tent. Keep the outdoor towel hung up under a tarp.

- If you’re going into the wilderness bring a dog emergency carry harness. Mountain Dogware and Fido Pro are two well reviewed brands.

- You can also purchase dog first aid kits.

- If your dog is freaked out by nighttime noises play a podcast, music, or white noise before they fall asleep.

- Almost all parks require your dog to be on leash at all times. Free up your hands by using a hands free leash. At camp, set up a line from tree to tree attaching your dog’s leash to it with a carabiner. Never leave your dog unattended.

- Be cautious about stagnant water. Giardia and blue-green algae can make your dog very sick and even lead to death.

- Going by boat? Get your dog a life vest and never tie them into the boat.

- Basic training in sit, stay, heel, and be quiet will reduce your stress levels.

In Atlantic Canada goldenrod is in full bloom. The plant is often mistaken for ragweed and blamed for seasonal allergies. But, these bright yellow flowers are not making you sneeze!

Some even claim a tea made from the leaves and flowers can help with allergies. The tea tastes like black liquorice, so I’ll pass.
