I better start posting these winter photos before the warm weather actually arrives! Here’s me and Moose on a snowshoe a couple months ago.

My first ever snowshoe was during an outdoor leadership course in university. We were doing a navigation class and learning how to leapfrog with a compass.

Leapfrogging is a useful way to navigate in poor visibility or dense forests where identifiable features are difficult to find. If you aren’t familiar with it, look it up. It’s slow going, but you never know when you might need it.

When I learned, we were travelling in teams of 4 bushwhacking through a dense forest looking for items and landmarks on a map.

My feet were so blistered from badly fitted boots by the end of the trip my socks were blood soaked. Despite it all, I fell in love with snowshoeing. It took me some time to buy my own, but here I am today happily adventuring in the deep snow! I can’t wait to someday try different styles of snowshoes!

If you hike through forests in Canada, you’ve likely come across tree lungwort (Lobaria pulmonaria).

Tree lungwort gets its common name from its resemblance to lung tissue. You’ll find it growing on the sides of broadleaf trees and sometimes on rocks. When it’s wet, it’s a bright green colour. When it’s dry, it takes on a dull grey-green colour.

Like most lichens, tree lungwort is very sensitive to air pollution, acid rain, and heavy metals. Because of this, it can be an important bioindicator of air quality and acid rain levels!

Just a short video of Moose and I snowshoeing about.

We recently discovered someone’s snowshoe trail connected to a trail that we frequent. We actually met the trail maker last winter on a nearby route. He mentioned he had marked off a trail in the woods accessible only by snowshoe. Despite his directions, we never did find it…until now!

A couple weeks ago, I noticed some snowed over snowshoe tracks and followed them. Sure enough the pink trail tape the man described marked some twists and turns. It’s a short but beautiful walk. Now that I found it, I hope I see him again to thank him.

I know he has a few more hidden in the area. Who knows, maybe we will stumble on them before all the snow melts.

Looking to the trees to spot the chickadees and n

Looking to the trees to spot the chickadees and nuthatches who are singing away. I laid out some sunflower seeds for them, but they were too skittish to get close. I’m sure they had a feast when I walked away.

The last couple months have been trying - for better and worse. Finally, I got some energy back and have been strapping on snowshoes and enjoying the quiet of the snow covered forests. And boy does it feel good to be outside again!
